By: Masibonge Somatyala
Members and
candidates of African National Congress (ANC), in Eastern Cape are consumed by
fear because of attacks and killings that have been happening in the province
before, during, and after the period of local government elections. The members
are scared because all of these attacks are directed to their senior
representatives.
This all started when
two leaders of ANC, Lubabalo Keso and Andile Andries were shot dead on 02 May
2022 outside
Andries' home in Kwa Nobuhle, Kariega .On 16 September 2022, the ANC in EC was
left in shock when it`s ward councilor of Ingquza Hill Local Municipality
Fundisile Ranayi and his 17-year old son were shot and killed in their home in
Joe Slovo Park. On 06 October 2022 the home of Port St Johns mayor, Nomvuzo
Mlombile Cingo was torched and that happened after a disgruntled group ordered
her to overlook shortlisted candidates for vacant senior positions in the
municipality. After four days, on 10 October 2022, the ANC Port St Johns local
municipality chief whip Xolile Moni and his five year-old-child had to run for
their lives after gunmen opened fire on their home after it was set alight. His
33-year-old nephew had to be rushed to the hospital after he was shot on his
lower body.
